Speaker Series: Jacquelyn Martin at Syracuse University
WPOW Traveling Exhibition, March 28, 2024
Gallery opening | Reception at 5 p.m. Syracuse University NH3
Speaker: Jacquelyn Martin at 6 p.m. in the i3 Center
Speaker Series: Allison Shelley at Indiana University
One of our last stops was Indiana University by WPOW co-director Allison Shelley.
Allison’s visit included a public lecture in the gorgeous Media School atrium attended by the dean, associate dean and director of journalism plus other faculty and students, a meet and greet at the Indiana Daily Student newspaper, a portfolio critique with a recently graduated photojournalism student, and dinner with seven journalism faculty members.
From Associate Professor of Journalism James D. Kelly, “One of my students in my Global Journalism course who attended the lecture this morning is planning a reporting trip to Botswana this winter and said she learned much from Allison about the relationship a reporter must establish with a source in a foreign culture. She said she feels much better prepared now.”
Huge thanks to our Speaker Series sponsors Sony and the Philip and Edith Leonian Foundation and to our Traveling Exhibition print sponsor Canon.
Speaker Series: Anna Rose Layden at Southern Illinois University
Next stop for the WPOW Speaker Series: Southern Illinois University with WPOW member Anna Rose Layden.
One of the best parts of this program is our focus on small group and one-on-one meetings— we even dedicate part of our budget towards hosting students/staff for coffee or a meal. We believe that it fosters the kind of familiarity that leads to candid conversations about what we do (and what the next steps might be for a budding talent).
In addition to speaking in classes, Anna was able to toast the opening of the WPOW Traveling Exhibition at the SIU School of Journalism and Advertising at a cafe beforehand with a handful of students.
“I think it was impactful for the students to see a young person working in an environment with such massive characters, and to be told that it's possible for themselves,” says Anna Rose. “I came from a much larger university. To spend time with students in a much smaller program, in a town I had never heard of, listening to their ideas and the work that they cared about was inspiring to me and a good reminder that anyone can do what we do, if given the encouragement and opportunity.”
The WPOW Speaker Series sends a WPOW member to one of the ten colleges and universities where our traveling exhibition is hung each year to inaugurate the exhibition, show their own work and speak to students about the craft of visual journalism. We believe that connecting professionals with budding visual journalists is the best way to demystify the career path and provide a bridge to the profession we are so passionate about.
Huge thanks to our Speaker Series sponsors Sony and the Philip and Edith Leonian Foundation and to our Traveling Exhibition print sponsor Canon.
1st Quarterly Meeting of 2024
Chloe Coleman is an award-winning photo editor who specializes in cross platform hybrid storytelling. She currently works as the senior photo assignment editor on the Opinions desk at The Washington Post.
Speaker Series: Leigh Vogel at Colorado Mountain College
The WPOW Speaker Series is off and running with our first stop at Colorado Mountain College by WPOWer Leigh Vogel! The series sends a WPOW member to one of the ten colleges and universities where our traveling exhibition is hung each year to inaugurate the exhibition, show their own work and speak to students about the craft of visual journalism. We believe that connecting professionals with budding visual journalists is the best way to demystify the career path and provide a bridge to the profession we are so passionate about.
Leigh: "Giving guidance on topics such as speaking with editors, what to research before going in to a pitch meeting, and considering finances and personal health, seem to help them gain perspective and confidence… They sometimes just need to hear about what we experience on a daily basis to help them take next steps.”
Huge thanks to our Speaker Series sponsors Sony and the Philip and Edith Leonian Foundation and to our traveling exhibition print sponsor Canon.
