Traveling Exhibition + Speaker Series
After its annual gallery debut in Washington, D.C., the WPOW Annual Photography and Multimedia Exhibition goes on tour, including to up to ten of the nation’s most revered colleges and universities for four-week stops throughout the academic year. Canon has generously underwritten the cost of prints for the 2023 WPOW traveling exhibition.
The WPOW Speaker Series sends a WPOW member represented in the exhibition to visit a participating institution to inaugurate the exhibition, show their work and speak to students about the career and craft of visual journalism. The program connects students with the creators of storytelling imagery, stimulating candid, first-hand conversations about real-world journalism and demystifying the pathways into the industry. The WPOW Speaker Series is made possible with the support of our sponsors, Sony and the Leonian Foundation, which allow it to be offered to these institutions cost-free.
“Thank you for sponsoring Leigh Vogel’s visit to our campus in November. Her visit, timed with the opening of the exhibit, provided a wonderful opportunity for our students to broaden their horizons and meet with an accomplished professional. I witnessed the growing excitement that she instilled in many of them who are hoping to pursue careers in photojournalism.”
— Deni Chamberlin, Director of Undergraduate Studies, Greenlee School of Journalism & Communication, Iowa State University
“The students at both universities were appreciative of the chance to ask questions, see a diverse body of work in the exhibition and generally excited to hear about what the day to day of photojournalism entails. For me, it was also invaluable presenting my work to new audiences, getting to know students and faculty at both schools and supporting current and future women photojournalists.”
— WPOW member Caroline Gutman, on presenting at Ohio University and James Madison University
"Hosting this exhibition at the Anthropology Museum in Xalapa, Mexico and learning about how women photojournalists cover politics and war in the US and around the world was an inspiring, once in a lifetime experience for our attending students and fellow journalists.”
— Oscar Martinez, Organizer, Mirar Distinto Photography Festival, Xalapa, Mexico.
