While a wealth of funding opportunities are available for “emerging” visual journalists and those with well-demonstrated experience, we have found little support for those in the critical mid-career period, when skills have been fine tuned but opportunities for growth can be hard to come by. The $4,000 WPOW Butterfly Grant aims to fill this gap, and in the process encourage professionals who might otherwise choose to abandon a well-researched project or leave the field altogether.

The Butterfly Grant is open to WPOW members only and supports new or in-progress photo, video or multimedia projects. Funds may be applied towards any part of project creation, including travel expenses, creative fees, exhibition mounting, book production, and community engagement. This grant is not intended to fund major equipment purchases, workshop attendance or general living expenses.

The winner will be asked to provide work in progress, which will be used soley to promote the artist and the WPOW Butterfly Grant, as well as to present the completed project at a WPOW event. Copyright will remain with the creator.
