Inaugural WPOW Butterfly Grant Awardee: Olga Jaramillo

WPOW is thrilled to announce the winner of our inaugural WPOW Butterfly Grant: Olga Jaramillo

Her project, “Dos Mundos” ("Two Worlds”), was begun in 2019 and tells the intimate stories of four mothers from El Salvador, Guatemala and Honduras who have immigrated to the U.S., shedding light upon the intergenerational impact of migration on their families and communities in their home countries.

Olga Jaramillo, born in Colombia, is a visual storyteller based in the U.S. Informed by her career as an economist, she advanced into photography and brought her social awareness and experience in Latin American socioeconomic development into her visual work. Through photography, short films, and text, she explores intricate relationships between identity, culture, and migration.

She says, “I am so grateful to have this support. For over 50 years, migration in the U.S. has been primarily viewed through the lens of policy reforms and focused on illegal border crossings mainly at the southern border. My aim for “Dos Mundos” is to open conversations around migration that focus on the humanity of immigrants.”

The $4,000 WPOW Butterfly Grant funds a project by a mid-career visual journalist and has been made possible by our sponsor, Canon.
